Why ‘Wisdump’
I like to think that Whitespace was my “professional” site where I could share my limited amount of wisdom to the world so when thinking of a new domain name I thought it would be cool to play off the word ‘wisdom’ because ‘knowledge’ was too big for me to type (and yes I know they are different). Here are some of the domains I tried to snap up:
- wisdum.com
- wisdumb.com
- wizdum.com
- wizdumb.com
Obviously I wasn’t successful in obtaining any of those so I went with ‘Wisdump’ and I am really happy about the choice simply because the name is stupid. You don’t see the ‘wis’ and all you hear is ‘dump’ which could conjure all types of images for you and therefore keeping it memorable.
To be more humane I get to say that this is the site where I am allowed to dump my knowledge onto the masses with regards to my professional subjects. So welcome to a new beginning and I look forward to pushing this site to new heights without the burden of the 9rules.com weighing me down or MovableType.
So please update your feeds to the new feed and let us get the ball rolling on this site. No it won’t stay in grayscale this was done in just a couple of hours so I will have to find a color scheme appropriate for my dumpage.

Is a nice brown out of the question?

Yeah I think that would be pushing things a bit too much…

Nice name. *deletes whitesapces adds wisdump*

Dope. I dig it. It really sticks with ya, the second I saw the name in a Growl notification I accidentally typed it into Google whilst intending to search for something else… good sign.

WISDUMP … very good! A great name Scrivs. Very, very catchy. :) Good luck on the new venture!
By Shawn Anthony on May 17, 2006 10:52 am
Yeah, it’s cute. But why keep both sites online, this will hurt your search engine rankings. It’s better to redirect the site (and all seperate pages), and tell people coming from the old domain that thisis just Whitespace on a new address.
Same goes for the feed by the way, just redirect it and also tell people to change it :)
By Ruben Timmerman on May 17, 2006 11:29 am
I like that because my feeds are organized alphabetically, your new site sits in the exact same spot as your old one in my reader. When I get to the end of the list, it’s pretty much always Scrivs that gets the last word.

I really dislike the name, sounds childish and seems like you tried to hard. Whitespace was classy easy to say, write and remember. The new name is sorry.
I am sorry but I have to be honest, I’d like to think you can do much better than that.
By Bruno on May 17, 2006 12:07 pm
So I guess theotherwhitespace.com is out of the question? ;)
Good luck Scrivs.
By Mike on May 17, 2006 12:17 pm
Yeah, I like the fact that you stayed with “W”. And I think the name works: though it doesn’t sound quite as elegant as Whitespace, it’s clever and to the point.
By Jennifer Grucza on May 17, 2006 12:51 pm
Impressed at how quickly you picked it.
Took me three tries to nail down what I liked, ah, the wonderful world of indecision…
Cool.
By Robert Bruce on May 17, 2006 12:57 pm
Can’t please em all eh Bruno?
By Scrivs on May 17, 2006 1:34 pm
Ruben: I explained over at Whitespace that both sites will not be kept online and there will definitely be a redirect occurring tomorrow.
By Scrivs on May 17, 2006 1:40 pm
Wow are my eyes tricking me or do you finally have an about and contact page that work? I suppose that means the whitespace link on the top of all the 9rules pages will go.
Wisdump… it sounds kind of magical, some kind of potion or spell. Maybe its just me.
P.S. You might want to look at the hovers on your links at the bottom it makes the links disappear.
By Eddie Sowden on May 17, 2006 2:35 pm
Yeah I figured it would be wise to have some kind of pages up to kill all of those emails I receive telling me that a page doesn’t exist where it should be. How in the hell did you even read the site far enough to get to the footer and realize the links disappear on hover?!
A new color scheme and header are coming this week so this definitely isn’t permanent, but the IA will probably remain since I like the direction I am going in. Yes, I know I am the first person on the block with a 2:1 two column layout.
By Scrivs on May 17, 2006 2:51 pm
Wisdump huh? Kinda sounds like my morning routine. Oh well, I got to admit I like your unique way of thinking about some things.
Good luck with the new site and congratulations on finally jumping off the train, as it were.

I like it. I’m glad you didn’t go with the choices above. The whole grayscale look for the site was playing tricks on my eyes. I thought my colors in Firefox were crapping out on me.

Hell now that I have Fusco’s mark (pun intended) of approval I can carry on to great things with this site. Now where in the hell is JC?
By Scrivs on May 17, 2006 3:09 pm
As mentioned above, wisdump sort of reminds me of what someone does after their morning coffee. How about codefog.com?…it’s still available. :)
By Alan on May 17, 2006 7:22 pm
Alan that’s what I was thinking when I said it to myself (whiz-dump). Add a brown colour scheme and well . . .
I do like the layout and greyscale colour scheme though.
By WD Milner on May 17, 2006 8:49 pm
Wisdump… first thing I thought: “Hm. ‘Wisdumb’ would’ve been funnier.” Looks like you thought the same… :D
How about Bizdump, Dezdump and Webdump sub categories?
By RonaldB on May 18, 2006 9:30 am
I’ll definitely have to consider those.
By Scrivs on May 18, 2006 10:28 am
I’m down with Wisdump as the new Whitespace. It hints at “dumping wisdom” on us all, though I’m sure some people might be inclined to believe the name is more synonymous with “wisdom from the ass.” To each his own.
By Patrick Haney on May 18, 2006 12:24 pm
I’m down with the new domain but this design is not nearly as convenient as the one Whitespace had. At least center this :)
By Montoya on May 18, 2006 2:13 pm
I love it. (I nearly wrote “I love you,” ha.) I love the simple design. The header which “steps down” into the content. It’s nice. The domain is clever. Oh, and thanks for the smooth transition from feed to feed. I actually missed the move at first because I didn’t recognize the change.
By Clay on May 19, 2006 1:35 am
Who says that you are dumping your knowledge,u r putting it into best use.
Congratulations for your new site!!
By mike on May 20, 2006 2:21 am
It sounds much friendlier than pisscrap.
