Working on the Weekend
Does anyone truly work on the weekends? I know the 9rules crew does some work and it seems easier to get work done on the weekends because there is no pressure. During the weekday I feel like there are a million things that need to get done at once, but on the weekend I tend to only have one focus and if I don’t get it done it’s okay because it’s the weekend.
So the question is, do you do any work on the weekend?

All the time. But, what’s the difference between work and play, for many of us? I love my job and I want to work on our sites. It’s relaxing and fun, so I sometimes do it in my spare time.

Yeah, I have no set schedule so I work whenever I have the time. Weekends are no different. I just gotta make sure that I get out enough, haha.
Although a lot of times, work = my own personal projects, so it’s not really “work”. Is it?

With school and everything, it’s impossible to dedicate some time for computer stuff on weekdays.

yes. because our bosses model themselves after the EA management team.

Try having kids, then you’ve pretty much have to work evenings and weekends if you want to get anything done! Pretty much the only time I can guarantee enough peace and quiet to get stuff done is between 11pm and 3am on a Saturday. It does leave you tired a lot of the time but it’s just one of those things you’ve got to do.

For some reason, I often have more inspiration to blog during the week, and to get some serious work done during the weekend :o
But as a more serious example, I love using sunday night to reboot my inboxes to 0, so I can make a nice clean start on monday, which is always filled with meetings and stuff like that that keeps you from gtd ;)

I definitely work on the weekends. But then again, I’m a minister by trade so Sunday is my busiest day :(. I do hate waking up early on Sundays though.

I opt with the working when can philosophy and actually often find taking a ‘weekend’ break in the week is a nice option. Then again that does bring up the question of what is your ‘weekend’ and does the weekend have to be the saturday / sunday thing anymore?

Amen to Jeff’s comment.

I work in the weekend whenever that is neccesary. If a client wants something done directly after the weekend, it’s possible. I have no problem with that, because I like my work and love to spend time on it. :)

There’s hardly ever a weekend that passes where I don’t at least spend a few hours working. That’s not counting work on my own site. That usually happens late at night or the wee hours of the morning, like last night.
As Jeff mentioned, I’m one of those people who really enjoy what they do and don’t have a problem spending some of my ‘free time’ working.

for the most part, yes. every weekend. unless we go away or there are family obligations. but weekends are my productive work time.
great site btw. I have been reading, I just don’t always have something of interest to comment about. not that this was an interesting comment anyway ;)

Sometimes on client projects. Mostly, my own. Days are days. If, on - Say - Wednesday, I’ve had enough of all things internet, I will tend my garden.

I am with Croft on this one. It is hard to draw the line with something that you are so passionate about. I was actually getting back to work when I saw this post. So there ya have it.

I’m always working on the weekend, either for my regular nine-to-five or my side business. One usually suffers on account of the other on the weekend, but that’s why God invented annual leave days for those unexpected three or four day weekends.

For as long as I can remember working, I’ve been working weekends. It’s no different than any other day really — though I do get more continguous time on tasks, so things move more smoothely.

I work on the weekends, but not by choice. I don’t have one day a week where I can just say, “it’s my day off”. I’m constantly working - it’s my own fault of course, because I could say no to projects… but I don’t. Plus I have kids, and a house to keep up. I haven’t actually just sat down, and played a video game or watched movie with a clean head and no stress or worries for a long time….

I try my best not to work on weekends but I can’t remember the last time I didn’t. Even now having the worst cold I can ever remember, I worked from 5-9AM this morning because I couldn’t sleep and didn’t want to wake up my wife. So I went downstairs and got quite a bit done.

Like Ryan, I try not to work weekends, but can’t remember the last time I didn’t do at least some work on a weekend.

As I also work full-time, weekend work is unfortunately necessary if I’m ever to get any paying freelance work done. I’d probably still be working weekends if I went full-time freelance, though.

I do at times but only when a project requires it such as an implementation or support.

In fact, this very weekend I designed and launch my 15tags blog. Something I hate about working on weekends is that I’m unable to get proper food here downtown. I have to eat sandwiches or quick stuff and I’m fat people, I love to eat! is one of my favorite moments of the day!
Here in Argentina, on weekends, nobody works, so you will be pretty much alone in the whole city; everyone is at home or traveling. It’s strange when you go out and there is no one (I mean, NO ONE) on the streets. But I guess that’s the attractive of working on weekends.
Is a love-hate attraction :)

Working on the weekends is generally reserved for my personal projects. I tend to divide the weekend time between that and getting out of the house though since the weekdays are pretty much go, go, go on work all the time.

I have the same psychological situation — during the 8-6, M-F times I feel much more stressed out with my brain racing through all the to-dos of every project I’ve got going. Once “non-working hours” roll around though, I can more easily focus on a specific goal and complete it without mental interruption, because then it’s not “work”.

I’m such a procrastinator I never get any work done.. :(
By Andre on May 29, 2006 10:51 pm
In theory, weekends are reserved for work on personal projects. However, since skiing, tennis, biking, volleyball, basketball, the Rocky Mountains, shopping and barbequing exists, I find that in reality I find little time or will to work on the weekends. I also suffer from the same procrastination tendencies as Andre.

Doing web dev as side work means guaranteed work on weekends. It’s when I get a break from my real responsibilities.
By Montoya on May 31, 2006 12:49 am
Funny you should say this… “seems easier to get work done on the weekends because there is no pressure.” I said this almost word for word just this past weekend. I put in a good 5 hours on both Saturday and Sunday. Not necessarily typical, but not rare, either. Actually, those are just billed hours. As a business owner, I’m working most of the time. But I echo Jeff Croft’s question posed in the first comment in this thread: What’s the difference between work and play? :-)

oftentimes, i tend to be more laidback when working during weekends - less pressure. at the same time, i tend to get less things done - less pressure = more distractions. it takes some sort of discipline to strike a balance and adher to it in the long run.

Yes, I pretty much work 7 days a week. Sometimes just a few hours a day, but putting it a lot of hours is required just to get by nowadays.
