DotD: The City Church

If you scour the design galleries you have no doubt since this work of art. Color scheme, typography and layout. The total package in aesthetics has been achieved. The message comes across strong, but not overbearing. Throw in a little flash and you have one of the best sites in 2006 so far in my opinion.

Done by the dream team at 31three.

  1. Scrivs, your link is wrong, it should be to thecity.org.

  2. I think the link should be: http://www.thecity.org/

  3. Psst. The link should go to thecity.org, not thecitychurch.com. :)

  4. Scrivs, I totally agree with you… This is one heckuva well-designed site. The organization is top notch. The design is well-done. We discussed it a bit over at GodBit.com a couple of weeks ago. It’s a great one, and they (31three) definitely deserves the attention they’ve gotten over this work of genius.

  5. Completely agree. Every now and then a site comes along that you wish you had designed!

  8. You said it. One of the best in 2006. The first time I saw it I was just in complete aw. Very well layed out, great colors, typography, etc. Very nice.

  9. Whoa, I’m not sure about “one of the best sites in 2006″, (check thefwa.com on pretty much any day), but there is no doubt that it is well executed.

I think the thing that immediately gets me is if you go to the site right now, there is a pretty poorly executed image with some sort of nasty faded-rounded-corner thing taking up the entire portion of the main content pane. Of course, this is not the fault of the original designers, but there needs to be guidelines to make sure things like this don’t happen. This can be borderline facist, but it really protects a design from being mangled.

  10. Ah, I got my wires crossed with the thecity.org/thecitychurch.com issue. That makes a lot more sense now.

  11. P.J. - Faded edges? I think you went to the site Scrivs accidently linked to. What he meant to link to was:

    http://www.thecity.org/

  12. Hah, woops. Sorry, you posted as I posted. Scrivs - You can remove my last comment.. and this one, if you’d like.

  13. It certainly is well-designed, but the white below the footer catches me off guard a little bit and seems to leave me hanging. I don’t know if that’s good or bad. Definitely best church website ever.

Side note: I don’t understand their favicon.

By Joe Lencioni on May 26, 2006 1:52 pm

  14. So embarassing, my apologies as I definitely did not mean thecitychurch.com.

By Scrivs on May 26, 2006 7:24 pm

  15. @joe: The favicon is a copy of the street sign image on the home page (first image in the slideshow).

As far as the design goes, it’s very, very well done. The colours work well together and there are plenty of fantastic little details all over the place.

  16. @Mike: I see it now. Thanks!

Also, now that I am looking at the page on a different monitor, the white below the footer seems to only happen on pages that are shorter than my browser window: http://www.thecity.org/cells

I saw it on every page because I have a very tall monitor at work and assumed it was part of the design.

  17. My vote goes for cork’d as the best of 2006 so far

  18. I just don’t see it. I’ve seen probably 15 different sites linking to The City Church’s site saying how “awesome” or “genius” or “beautiful” the design is…I’m not following. Sure it’s a solid design. Sure it’s easy to use. But I really think people are putting way more credit towards this than it really warrants. Maybe it’s just a personal taste thing.

  19. hmm, i wonder who designed the website?
